The course

In this workshop we will be marking out and making some of the traditional carpentry joints used in the construction of the garden building opposite.

This course is very much a ‘Hands-on’ experience, introducing the marking out methods and use of hand and power tools used in the modern timber framing industry.

By completing this workshop students will have acquired the knowledge and skills required to make traditional carpentry joints used in the construction of the wall structure of the garden building opposite.

The Tutor

The tutor James Thomson is a professional timber framer with many years in both teaching and carpentry. He is one of the founders and a director of the following businesses: The Denali School of Timber Framing — Anchorage Alaska And Thomson Timber — Star Fife Scotland He is also a fully qualified Teacher of Craft, Design and Technology with 15 years experience teaching in High Schools throughout Fife. He received specialised training in Timber Framing from Joe Thomson(tutor) at the Weald and Downland Museum and from Steve Chappell, the founder of Fox Maple School of Timber Framing in Maine.

Participant information

The course will be limited to 8 participants and is ideally suited for beginners and hobbyist wishing to develop skills in timber framing. Warm and practical clothing should be worn and a pair of steel-toed safety boots are all that is required. Students will have access to all the hand and power tools required. These may be available for purchase at the end of the course at a discounted price.

Fees £200 for full participation in the workshop. This includes tuition, use of tools and materials, teas and coffee. Please bring a pack lunch.

WEEKEND COURSE ITINERARY

SATURDAY

8.00  – 9.00 am

· Introductions to each other and reasons for attending

· Brief explanation of Mill Rule method of timber framing

· Introduce the use of Reference faces, Templates, Rods, CAR and Go/Nogo gauges

9.00 – 12.00 am

Students mark out Posts using appropriate rod & templates, cut tenons and mortices in posts using both hand and power tools. Confirm good quality with go/nogo gauges

12.00 – 1.00 pm

Lunchtime

1.00 – 4.00 pm

Students mark out Braces using appropriate rod and templates, cut joints for Braces using both hand tools and power tools. Confirm good quality with go/nogo gauge.

4.00 – 5.00 pm

Students mark out Tiebeams using appropriate rod & templates, cut joints for Tiebeams using both hand & power tools.  Confirm good quality with go/nogo gauge

SUNDAY

  

8.00 – 11.00 am

Students will mark out Wallplates using a rod & templates, cut joints for wallplates using hand & power tools. Confirm good quality using go/nogo gauge

11.00 – 1.00 pm

Students will continue making Wallplates as above.

1.00 – 2.00 pm

Lunchtime

2.00 – 3.00 pm

Depending on progress, students assemble the frame up to wall plate level

3.00 – 5.00 pm

Students continue assembling the frame.
